We have experience in wide range of diseases and conditions. Observation of ESCT effects in different clinical models allows for deeper understanding of mechanisms of their work. At the same time, our experience differs depending on the disease.
Main indications for ESCT are diseases characterized by
- cell loss;
- cell dystrophy and degeneration;
- vessel and nervous trophic disturbances;
- metabolic and homeostasis disorders;
- development of connective tissue;
- inherited disorders;
- aging, involution.
Comprehensive studies have been carried out for ESCT treatment of diabetes mellitus, cancers, AIDS/HIV, hematological diseases. Dissertation studies by postgraduate medical doctors for PhD degrees pursuant to National Medical University academic plans and requirements have been carried out under scientific guidance of Prof. Alexander I. Smikodub, in each of the above areas. scientific work in other fields is being carried out at present or has only started.
Provided below is a short summary on each topic. More details can be found under specific diseases.
Tumors
ESCT is possible at almost every stage of cancerous diseases and is indicated
At the initial stage of treatment when radical treatment (tumor removal) cannot be started because of such complications as anemia, weakness, emaciation, thrombocytopenia, fever, depression, etc. Application of ESCT prior to the surgery allows for better preparation of the patient and for it, better endurance, as well as for acceleration of recovery. Improvement of anti-tumor immunity results in lesser probability of metastasizing. Patients who received ESCT prior to the surgery, showed better tolerance of the initial course of chemotherapy.
During the course of chemotherapy or radiotherapy, in case of such complications as leukopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, anemia, hepatitis, enteropathy, emaciation, depression, epillation, etc. After chemotherapy, ESCT allows for quick (5 to 7 days) restoration of peripheral blood parameters, improvement of general condition, avoidance of common complications. ESCT provides the possibility for more aggressive chemotherapy, with much less risk.
After chemotherapy (radiotherapy), ESCT results in restoration of anti-tumor immunity (including NK-cells), hematopoiesis, improvement of general condition, decreased weakness, improved psycho-emotional condition, and better quality of life.
ESCT considerably contributes to anti-tumor immunity, prevention of tumor diseases, relapses and metastasizing.

Conditions Resulting in Dystrophy and Degeneration
ESCT is characterized by marked effect of general restoration of impaired functions, caused by male and female climax, premature aging, and chronic fatigue syndrome. In such cases, we observe systemic improvement of all organs and tissues: psychical, visceral, muscular activity, work capacity (both mental and physical), libido and potency, psychological vigor, self-estimation, i.e. all components of life quality. Manifestation of changes become more vivid, and rejuvenation effect is observed in most cases.
AIDS/HIV
New method of AIDS treatment with the use of Embryonic Stem Cell Transplantation has been elaborated and protected by a number of patents, including US Patent No. 5,811,089 (1998) and US Patent No.6,184,033 (2001). This method permits for restoration and maintenance of immune activity, substantial improvement of the clinical picture, considerable inhibition of the progression of the disease, lesser probability or delay in the development of AIDS symptoms in HIV-infected patients. In our opinion, the best results are achieved by combination of antiretroviral therapy that allows for retrovirus destruction, and our method providing substantial restoration of the immune system.
First ESCT in AIDS patient was performed on the 4th of March, 1993. She was in severe condition and stayed in the intensive care unit of Health Ministry Institute for Infectious Diseases. Her condition was complicated by pneumocystic pneumonia, herpetic encephalitis, spastic paraplegia, and fallopian neuritis developed as a result of encephalitis as well as intolerance of antiretroviral preparations. Life expectancy was very short – just a few months.
Next ESCT was performed in April, then - in November, and now she needs only one ESCT in 1-2 years. Progression of the disease was terminated, manifestations of neurological symptoms decreased, infectious episodes frequency went down to 1-2 times a year. At present, her condition is viewed as satisfactory; she is active, provides full range of self-service, uses walking stick, not the crutches as prior to the treatment. She is working in small market trading. She has never received any antiretroviral therapy, since in 1991, she showed intolerance to it.

Autoimmune diseases
Autoimmune diseases Autoimmune diseases (e.g. diabetes mellitus, connective tissue diseases, non-specific ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, chronic active hepatitis, multiple sclerosis, etc.) are effectively treated by ESCT.
The immune effect of ESCT comprises not only stimulation, but also correction of immune response and even strong suppression of autoimmune activity. This mechanism seems to be carried out by regulatory systems, according to current needs of the recipient's body.
Among existing methods, ESCT is the only one capable of interruption of autoimmune aggression without total suppression of the immune system. This effect was observed at early stages of diabetes, where after ESCT, diabetic insulitis no more results in the destruction of B-cells. In autoimmune arthritis, enterocolitis, and autoimmune aggression against nervous tissue, skin, liver, kidneys, lungs, observed were substantial decrease of immune activity and clinical manifestations of specific symptoms.
In acute phase of ulcerative colitis, observed was rapid immune suppression - within 2 to 4 weeks, as well as inhibition of the disease course. In our practice, there were several cases of interruption of fulminate course of ulcerative colitis, without surgical intrusion. Improvement of the patients' general condition resulted in gradual restoration of immune parameters.
Diseases of Nervous System
According to our experience, ESCT has proven to provide very good results in treatment of nervous diseases with dystrophy, degeneration (Multiple sclerosis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Myopathies of different etiology, Alzheimer’s disease), neurotrauma, post-operative conditions. In the above cases, observed are inhibition of the progress, gradual and steady restoration of some lost functions, substantial improvement of general condition and emotional state.

Anemia
We have experience of successful treatment of primary and secondary anemias, including aplastic and inherited anemias. Indication for ESCT in anemia syndrome is ineffectiveness of conventional medicinal treatment.
Good results were seen in treatment of anemias of different etiology; they were especially remarkable in several cases of severe aplastic anemia. There were cases, where after 1-2 ESCT courses, patients survived for years with good hematological parameters, no routine treatment in hematological departments, delivered children, and regained working capacity after almost total disability. Such results are very obvious and can't be achieved by any other existing methods.

Myelodepression
ESCT allows for termination of primary and secondary myelodepression. Especially efficient is ESCT in myelodepression caused by chemotherapy, roentgen and radiotherapy.
Restoration of leukocyte, thrombocyte and erythrocyte counts is observed in several days after ESCT. Disappearance of weakness, improvement of general condition, emotional state of the patient, are observed as well. Manifestations of cytostatic hepatitis and enterocolitis disappear. After ESCT, patients tolerated chemotherapy and radiotherapy much better.
Our experience in ESCT in myelodepression secondary to leukemia and cancer is quite large. In most cases, we have succeeded to help patients to overcome this severe complication.
Leukemia
ESCT in leukemia helps to start usual treatment in patients with selective cytopenia or pancytopenia.
It helps to tolerate chemotherapy, avoid cytostatic complications, and restore blood parameters after chemotherapy, or in order to continue chemotherapy. ESCT substantially improves quality of life of patients in remission, strengthens their will, their mental and physical state, and belief in success of the treatment.

Diabetes Mellitus
We have developed an ESCT-based method (without the use of pancreatic B-cells) for treatment of diabetes mellitus. This method allows for considerable hypoglycemic effect with reduction of external insulin dose by 50-70%.
Observed are normalization of immune and hematological parameters, decrease of micro- and macroangiopathies and trophic disorders, improvement of general condition and restoration of work capacity. Inhibition of the disease progression is obvious, remission periods become 2-3 times longer and deeper. Severity and frequency of diabetic complications decrease; quality of life and life expectancy of patients improve.
Our method is indicated at all stages of diabetes. However, it is most effective in cases of recently revealed insulin-dependent diabetes – ESCT results in termination or inhibition of the disease progression. This method has proven its effectiveness in types I and II diabetes.
We have been granted several Letters of Patent on this method.

Diseases of Connective Tissue
ESCT in patients with connective tissue diseases results in:
- decrease of inflammatory activity;
- normalization of immunity;
- recovery of hematopoiesis;
- decrease of dystrophy of internal organs, cartilages, muscles, and bones.
ESCT allows for remission and substantial recovery of the impaired tissues. Considerable effect of ESCT is shown in rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus. It permits to discontinue glucocorticoid therapy or substantially decrease its dosage.
Aging
It is a hard task to give exact definition to such notion as aging, but every person who has reached certain age can describe it well.
ESCT in aging results in improved physical activity, which is manifested by decreased weakness, less tiredness in the evening, improved gait, straightened back, increased work capacity during the day. Observed is also improvement of mental ability, which is demonstrated by quickened decision making process, restoration of short-term memory, and stabilization of emotional sphere. One of the most important ESCT’s achievement in aging is marked cosmetic effect seen in restored complexion and skin color, decrease of small wrinkles, lifting, sparkling eyes. These effects arise from inside, as a result of body rejuvenation, which is unachievable by other methods.
Psycho-physiological action
In most cases, ESCT is followed by substantial improvements in volitional, mental, and physical spheres and is felt by patients as regaining of internal strength, confidence and hope, as well as disappearance of depression. Changes are very well perceived by patients, especially if their condition has been aggravated by disease. Psycho-physiological improvements are very helpful in severe diseases.
